A bright and breezy start to the week and Monday saw the boats drifting between Dogwood Bay and Three Trees across the front of the dam. Despite the sunny spells the fish were showing well and the boats soon spread out along the reservoir.Being a westerly wind the lodge bank to the Island fished well with many of the fish caught on dries and emergers.

Bob Fitzpatrick and crew had a great day, 4 anglers between them boating over 100 fish. Bob, who is the inventor of the Yellow Owl CDC, said it was one of the best days he has had. They caught in numerous places including Sams Dyke, Mucky Bay and Dogwood Bay. Most of their fish fell to the deadly Yellow Owl. Horace Wood also did well catching 5 hard fighting fish by midday on Buzzers while drifting across the front of the dam. Steve Benby had 10 fish including a nice brown of 4lbs which he returned, they were all caught on dries. Mike Firth and Arthur Whale started their 5 day trip off well with 5 lovely rainbows all on CDC’s.

Bright conditions continued but not so breezy as the week progressed and catch returns remained good. On Tuesday Roger Charles had 5 fish off the bank including a Brown of approx. 6lbs which he returned. Karl Cowzer, who always fishes on the surface where possible, had 23 fish all on dries.. splendid fishing!!

The start of the Pike fly fishing season on Friday saw several predator hunters visit the Eyebrook, they were not disappointed. Plenty of fish were caught right throughout with the biggest of the day going to Jobe Burnham, a beauty of 22lbs. He caught a dozen fish in total. Guy Eldridge also had a great day catching around 20 fish with the largest in the high teens.

Towards the end of the week the hot weather had its effect on the fishing and the water temperature had risen to 19 degrees C. Meaning the bank fishing was very hard indeed. The boats were able to catch in the deeper water but Mark Hunt went against the odds and had 7 fish in Mucky Bay on CDC’s, crunchers and damsels.. there’s always one who has to spoil it for everyone else!!

Eyebrook on June 16^th we are allowing anglers to fly fish for the pike.

You will need to follow our predator fly fishing rules

1. Predator fly fishing permitted from 16^th June,
2. Predator anglers must have the correct unhooking equipment-a large landing net (minimum 42 inch or larger) and large unhooking mat (minimum 42 inches or larger preferably with a 2 inch thick bottom and sides)All predators caught must be carefully unhooked (long nosed forceps and hook cutters a must have) whether in the enclosure of a landing net in the water or on an unhooking mat.
3. Never weigh or lift a fish by the gills, always use a net or weigh sling.
4. When moving the fish to and from the water use a landing net or zipped unhooking mat at all times; never carry the fish unsupported even for short distances.
5. When photographing fish, support the fish over a large unhooking mat, kneel and never stand up with the fish.
6. When returning fish after capture, please support the fish in the water giving it plenty of time to recover before releasing
7. Minimum of 20lb leader with a wire trace must be used at all times.
8. Minimum 9wt rod and a reel capable of holding 100yds of backing.

What a change, the weather has been a complete contrast from last week. 40 mph winds and heavy rain for the start of the week, but it’s just what the reservoir needed to fish well again. With the water temperature, back to average for June. The fish have returned to the top few feet of the water level. Fish can be seen feeding in the surface, so dries are working well from both the bank or boat. Ginger Middas, orange or claret hoppers and shipman’s buzzers all being successful. Nymphs also continue to catch fish. Preferably fish in the top few inches with a buoyant fly on the point. Most boat anglers have fished inftront of the dam wall mainly trying to find shelter from the strong south westerly winds. Bank anglers are catching well again. The Belle and Hawthorn hedge being top spots but fish have been caught from around the Island and into Mucky bay. Mainly on nymphs, red holographic dial bachs, green dial bachs or size 12 and 14 black buzzers.

Monday saw the first day of the volatile weather. 20 mph winds and heavy showers, meant it wasn’t going to be the most comfortable day for boat fishing. Andrew Bentley and Peter Andrews didn’t mind though, their rods kept bending. Catching over 20 fish between them. A blob top dropper followed by two black buzzers size 10 and 12 doing the damaged, fished at around 20 feet on a Di5 sinking line.

Tuesday was the first day of noticeable change in water temperature. Unfortunately, however wind speeds of 25mph and gusts to 45 prevented the boats from going out. There were however two hardy bank anglers fighting against the wind. Mr Foulds and Mr Allison had hoped to boat fish but weren’t disappointed to fish the bank after they returned to the lodge having caught 41 fish between them. Giving Tuesday a rod average of 20.5 fish per rod. Its fishing its head off! The pair fished the Hawthorn hedge to Sam’s Dyke with green dial bachs fish on a washing line. Fish could be seen, moving in the surface in a few feet of water making them an easy cast to reach from the bank.

The winds dropped slightly on Wednesday allowing the boats out again. It wasn’t particularly comfortable though, most boat anglers taking shelter in Dogwood bay or the Belle. Clive Moore and Ian Jobe caught a dozen between them from the Hawthorn Hedge bay, fishing buzzers high in the water. Bob Thompson had a good afternoon catching 5 nicely silvered fish on a selection of dry flies, bobs bits, crippled midge and a CDC. The rod average remained high, not as high as Tuesday though, a more realistic 9.09, not bad for the second week of June !

Winds were lighter still for Thursday, and fish could be seen frequently taking from the surface. Nicklamyman and Bill Hill bank fished the Belle catching nearly 20 fish between them on a selection of nymphs. David Moore and friends boat fished, all catching extremely well from boats drifting the basin. Most opted to fish dries, ginger Middas and claret hoppers taking the vast majority of their fish. Mark Hunt made a late appears to fish the evening rise, he wasn’t disappointed to hear the fish had been rising all day and wish he’d arrived earlier. He tucked his boat in the slack water behind the Island and fished dries. Shipmans buzzers and Daddies accounting for his 11 fish.

The excellent fishing continued for Friday and into the weekend, Sean Glover and Dave Gregory had a good day, netting a dozen fish each on nymphs fished on a washing line. Chis Hubbard also had a successful session, constantly catching fish from the main basin of various methods. John Honey caught well on Saturday catching 20 plus fish on a red dial bach from the dam and the cowshed to the turn rafts..Alex Booth Fly Fishers enjoyed their group visit. 14 anglers boat fished and caught 33fish between them weighing 66lbs 7ozs. Top rod on the day was Vic Byrne catching 6 fish for a weight of 12lbs plus 2 hour time bonus. best fish was caught by Jeff Savidgeweighing 2lbs 9ozs. Bob Clark and boat partner Joe Mollinson drifted from the Belle and both caught well on candy or tequilla blobs or a green cruncher.

Most boats opted to drift the main basin, with a few finding shelter in Mucky bay and found fish there too. Best methods were ginger or orange dries, dial bachs and damsel nymphs.

“Challenging” conditions this week at Eyebrook. With high water temperatures, the fish has moved lower in the water level and found the thermocline, which is currently between 20 and 25 feet down. The thermocline is where there is a dramatic change in water temperature in comparison to the increase in depth. The fish find the thermocline more comfortable due to more oxygen and food sources holding there.

Bank anglers have found this week particularly difficult with few fish feeding in the shallow margins the dam wall has proved most successful. Fish can be seen under the surface taking damsel nymphs or pin fry but these fish are hard to tempt.

Boat fishing has been much more successful. Fishing the deep water in the main basin with various sinking lines in conjunction with buzzers, blobs or damsels working very well at times. The majority of boats are anchoring but others and drifting with faster sinking lines.

M Bowler boat fished on Monday catching 7 fish on black buzzers and a black tadpole fished on a fast sinking line in front of the dam wall. Member Dave Shaercaught well on a Di3 and Di5 lines, fishing with damsels and slow retrieve he caught 7 fish in his short morning session. Mr Shepherd and Mrkennan had a cracking day catching over a dozen fish each on a Di7 line with a team of size 10 black and red buzzers fished vertically bellow the rod tips.

Invicta fly fishers held their annual visit to Eyebrook on Saturday. 21 anglers went a float catching 55 fish between them. One method seemed to rule the day with the top three rods following almost identical methods; heavy buzzers fished on midge tip lines with long leaders, drifting across the deep water of the basin. The fish were so deep that buzzers needed to get down at least 20’ to 30’ to be in the zone, so it was a long cast, giving the buzzers time to get down before the boat caught up with the leader. However, fish were not taking the buzzer until the ‘lift and hang’ and nearly every fish was taken on the hang.

Keith Gilchrist was into fish very quickly and by early afternoon he had bagged up with 8 fish; he went on to catch 15!  Paul Heavens had 5 by the time we came off at lunchtime and Mark Searle was on 4, however Mark bagged up late afternoon to join Keith on eight. Paul was unable to get his last fish and finished the day with 7 fish. The next best places were filled by Andy Newman and Neil Potts both with 4 each..

Saturday saw the best returns of the week, in part due to the England fly fishing team having a practise day. A rod average of 4.5 was achieved with every boat out and a good few anglers fishing the bank. Ian Barr led the way with 20 plus fish caught using a midge tip line to size 8 buzzers tied on a grub hook. All anglers achieved the best results when their flies were 90 degrees to their fly line, fished static at between 20 and 25 feet. Ed Foster also had a successful day. Netting plenty of fish including a super rainbow of 5lb 6oz

High winds are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday which should cool the water, hopefully bringing the fish back to the surface. There is a chance boats will not be allowed out so please do check with the lodge prior to making your journey.

Our weekly stockings continue, to date we have stocked 14,425 trout

It has been a very mixed week at Eyebrook. Every method has worked in every location at some point throughout the week, although the deeper water in front

The hot bright conditions put the fish down at times, but as soon as the cloud cover returned the fish were back on top. Most anglers are still fishing buzzers at various depths. Brighter days buzzers fished between 15 and 20 feet down was the successful method, on the more over cast days a washing line with a damsel booby on the point. Size 10 buzzers when fished at depth, a red and black or black buzzer size 10 or 12 doing well. Smaller nymphs are working best closer to the surface size 14 or 16s. At times dries have been working, with the mass of natural hatches, small dries work best. Size 14 or 16 shipman’s, crippled midge, yellow Owl or a claret hopper all taking their share of the fish. The dam wall has fished extremely well all week, with many anglers having red letter days anchored over the deep water, many catching well into double figures. The Belle, Hawthorns and Mucky bay have fished well when conditions have been favourable particularly for the bank anglers.

On more over cast days and into the evenings a few anglers have chosen to drift the open water between the chestnut tree and willows and have been rewarded with some great fish. Well grown on fish of 3 to 31/2 lbs are being caught regularly. Best Brown trout of the week was caught by Kevin Hobson whilst fishing the East Yorkshire fly dressers friendly match on Saturday. The super fish of around 8lbs took a damsel fished on a sunk line off the tower and put up one hell of a fight before being safely returned to the water.

The week started well with Monday and Tuesday were bright at times with a south westerly wind but the water temperature remained at around 14.5c. Richard Watson and Bill Whittle boat fish caught a dozen fish between them from mucky bay and The Pens, fishing crunchers high in the water. MR Hobson fished the Island from the bank and caught 4 fish on a CDC averaging nearly 3lb. Parker and White fished mucky bay and the Island from a drifting boat and caught a dozen fish a piece on a blue flash damsel, red holographic Dial Bachs and Crunchers fished on a floating line.

Wednesday temperatures soared, and extremely bright with little and at times no ripple on the water, pushing the fish down in the water level. Tim Grove had an exceptionally good day despite the conditions boating 15 nice fish, fishing buzzers on a midge tip. As did Mr Kelly and Mr Mclean boating over 20 fish throughout the day. A Joyce and D Bolton fished the Deepwater water in front of the dam and tower using Di5s or Di7 lines with blobs, boobies and damsel. The pair continuously caught throughout the day.

Saturday was extremely busy with nearly every boat out and 14 float tubers on the water. Scottish anglers Mr Borthwick, Mr Mclean, Mr Malcolm, Mr Mackie, and Mr Kelly got it right from the start. Fishing buzzers at 15 – 20 feet on floating or midge tip lines they couldn’t help but continuously catch fish returning over 100 fish to the 3 boats.

The British float tube association held their annual Eyebrook match, 14 float tubers took to the water. The competition average was 4.72 and was won by Tony Parker killing his first 4 fish for a weight of 8lb 12. Carl Ward caught a brown trout of 4lb which was safely returned.

East Yorkshire Fly dressers guild held a friendly match on Saturday. 6 pairs of angler’s boat fished and had a commendable day. Tom O’Donnell won with his bag of 8 fish for 16lb 3 oz closely followed by his father Pete with 8 fish for 15lb 11oz. Tom also returned a pike weighing well into double figures. The pair fished with sinking lines in the deep water using damsels and a steady retrieve. Pete was presented with the Peter Cook Memorial Cup for second place. The trophy is awarded to the runner up as Peter ‘always came second’ Well done to all anglers and thank you from the Eyebrook team for being so well organised.

Conditions were not the best on Sunday, overcast with the occasional sunny spell and a north westerly ripple which unfortunately went to being flat calm at times. J Gamble bank fished at the Belle and caught 5 fish on a damsel. Tim and Tina Kirk fished the Belle and Dogwood bay catching 3 quality fish on a bibio hopper. D Graham and P Bowler caught 14 fish, fishing with pale epoxy buzzers at around 15 feet in the main basin.

With winds staying in the South the fishing has remained good this week although some very wet days have tested anglers waterproofs at times. However this much needed rain has bought the water level nicely back up to normal after what has been a very very dry start to May.

Plenty of buzzer hatching, lake Olives and Alder flies as well as the first Damsels of the season. Some anglers have already reported spooning large numbers of Damsel nymphs from fish, some still wriggling. P. Mitchell who fished on Sunday said he enjoyed liberating some of these wriggling nymphs and released them back into the water, not many Damsels have seen the inside of a 2lb Rainbow and lived to tell the tale!! As well as saving nymphs he also caught ten trout mainly on buzzers as well as an impressive 6lb Tench which also fell to the deadly midge pupa.

Fish have been frequently showing on top and are taking dries and emergers such as CDC’s, Shipmans Buzzer and Crippled Midge. However Buzzers and Diawl Bachs fished in the top few inches on a washing line have accounted for the majority of fish caught.

Monday was a tough day due to gusty south westerly winds which bought the odd shower as well, Jobe Burnham, one of our fishery wardens, spent the day on the water and boated a respectable five fish including a lovely grown on Brownie of 4lbs. W Cram and R Wilson weren’t deterred by the conditions, they boat fished and netted 20 plus rainbows including fish to 3lb, on washing line tactics with a FAB on the point.

A steadier wind on Tuesday and more overcast conditions for much of the day brought the fish back on top. The bank fished much better and fish could be seen top across the reservoir. Roy Swinfield was back on the bank, he caught 14fish in mucky bay, fishing a washing line and dial bachs. Irish angler Martyn Orram had a good start to his three-day package. Martyn caught well throughout the day from an anchored boat in Mucky bay. He fished a shipman’s buzzers on the point and a single size 14 black buzzers on his dropper. The fished took both flies but certainly wanted the shipman’s. Neil Benjamin and boat partner Ian Simmons of County Durham made the trip south once again, they boat fished, drifting the chestnut tree and mucky bay they caught a dozen fish a piece on mainly dries. A yellow Owl CDC taking the majority of fish.

Wednesday was ’wet wetwet’. Few anglers braved the conditions even Wednesday regular Clive Moore thought better of it. However, it proved to be one of the best fishing days of the week. Fish could be seen on the surface, feeding on large pale buzzers around the chestnut tree and Norris Dyke. Mr Orram had another successful day, boating nearly 20 fish he was delighted and said the fishing was that good it was certainly worth getting wet through for! Mr Bellamy also had a good session. Boat fishing in front of the dam wall he netted 9 good rainbows on mainly lures

Thursday was an extremely busy day with nearly the entire fleet of boats out. Most boats fished the dam wall or mucky bay. Drifting or anchoring didn’t seem to make a huge amount of difference to the returns. Nearly every angler using a floating line, a couple however fished an intermediate with damsels and blobs and caught particularly well over deeper water. P Holmes had a good morning taking 7 fish on a yellow owl from a drifting boat around the island. R Peterson bank fished the Island with a damsel nymph on the point and two dial bachs and caught well and commented that when wading, fish were rising behind him in a few feet of water. Terry Power had a quick couple of hours at the Belle, caught his 4 fish limit with ease on a mix of nymphs.

The good sport continued for Friday, although conditions were changeable. Fish could be seen feeding in the surface when there was a steady breeze. At times the reservoir became a mill pond making catching the fish difficult. George hall had 7 fish from a boat from the damn wall. Mr Naylor and Mr Houlton had 10 fish to the boat on small dries drifting and casting to rising fish.

Saturday saw many anglers fishing the bank. The Island into Mucky bay was the hotspot with fish feeding very close to the margins. Mr N Eveson fished the island catching well on a CDC and had numerous offers making the fishing great fun. David Wallis had 9 fish on a cripple midge and dial bachs. The boats also did very well, Mr Dutton had 10 fish on a ‘football’ buzzer. Mr Signy and his son caught well on buzzers fished on a floating line they netted 15 fish between them from mucky bay.

The week ended with a healthy rod average of 5.5. Foremark fly fishers held a friendly competition at Eyebrook. 11 Anglers boat fished and all caught fish. The competition was won by Ric. Taking 7 fish for 12lbs 13oz. Paul caught the best fish of the day a nicely grown on rainbow of 3lb. Steve Lawrence caught 14 fish in mucky bay on various tactics from the bank. John Harratt had a last four-hour ticket and caught the evening rise just right. Netting 4 fish in two hours.

Warmer days and South westerly winds have meant conditions have been much improved on weeks previous at Eyebrook and so has the fishing. Water temperature is now at 13c. Massive buzzer hatches, olives, damsels and sedge are plentiful on the water, fish are well up in the water level once again and are certainly catchable on a dry fly. Many anglers however still fishing nymphs or buzzers high in the water to great success. The bank is still producing good sport, certainly on a warm overcast evening but can be more challenging on a bright day as the fish are now dispersing into the deeper water. Boats are still catching well in the shallows, cowshed, stoke dry and mucky bay all still holding a lot of fish. Dries including, CDC’s, shipman’s buzzer, crippled midge and black hoppers are all taking fish particularly on drifts from the Chestnut tree to Stoke dry. Red holographic diawl bachs, black buzzer and crunchers fished high in the water are doing well. I’d recommend a booby damsel on the point as damsel nymphs are starting to appear. The Leicester bank is now being most productive from the bank, cowshed, Hawthorns and dam wall are all producing fish.

The week got off to a good start with Phillips Electrical competition. This competition has been going since, I believe 1997. It is attended by ex-employees of the Philips UK group of Companies, many of these Companies no longer exist. Unfortunately numbers have been slowly decreasing as the entrants get older and the group could do with some new younger members, in 1998 there were 62 entrants at Rutland Water. This year’s competition was attended by 14 anglers in 7 boats fishing to the rules of the reservoir. The winner of the competition was David James and David Edwards formerly of Origin UK, the IT arm of Philips. They boated 12 fish for a total weight of 21 lb 4 oz, second was James Vasey and Geof Curry with 10 fish for 19 lb 5 oz, third was John Middleton and Nigel Vincent-Piper with 7 fish for 16 lb 2 oz. The total catch was 44 fish giving a rod average of 3.14..

Mr Christie and Mr Rennick enjoyed a good day on Tuesday, fishing a balloon caddis and suspender buzzer the pair netted over twenty fish each from the top shallows. Eyebrook veterans Norman Blake and Dennis enjoyed a day afloat. 6 fish between them and loosing many more in play. On Dial bachs and buzzers fishing at Stoke dry.

Eyebrook held the annual HMRC/civil service match. Conditions had changed greatly from practise days. Anglers were met with flat calm conditions, bright and all round ‘Challenging’. 37 anglers took part catching 185 fish between them. The day was won by Fraser McConnell. He caught his limit and went on the C+R giving him a total bag weight with bonuses of 48lb 8. The winning team went to Scotland South with a total team bag weight of 99lb 14oz. Well done to all competitors.

Saturday was a productive day for both bank anglers and boats. The whole fleet were out, most boats fished the chestnut and mucky bay where there have been lots of fish showing and many being caught well over 3lb. Dave Etty bank fished nymphs in mucky bay, hardly having to wade he caught well throughout the day. Andy Gallacher and John Punt had there usually Saturday boat. Both had a dozen or so fish on buzzers from various areas around the reservoir.

Conditions weren’t the best on Sunday, strong westerly winds and bright spells the fish were very much ‘up and down’ in the water level. There were very few bank anglers, the few that did turn out fished the island with mixed results. Most fish were coming to nymph’s. buzzers or dial bachs fished on a washing line. The boats had more success, many fishing over deeper water but still fishing the top few feet. W Cram and R Wilson had a good day, boating twenty plus fish on a dial bachs, buzzers size 12 fished with an FAB on the point.

It’s been a cold and windy week at Eyebrook. North winds prevailed making it cold to be on the water. Returns remained respectable with a weekly average of 3.69 fish per rod with a wide variety of flies and methods working. Most fish still being taken on nymphs, black buzzers or red holographic dial bachs taking fish on sizes 12 or 14 fished within a few inches of the surface. There are still fish showing on the surface particularly on warmer days and out of the wind. Hawthorn fly and pollen beetles are both being blown on to the water so various small black dry flies also taking a few fish. The bank continues to fish well, with no weed growth as of yet and fish feeding close to the margins, stoke dry road and the willows have produced the best sport. Boats have found fish in the more shelter areas of the reservoir, the Willows to the turn raft being most successful, most anglers choosing to anchor to avoid being blown on a fast drift into rougher water.

Dave Etty bank fished at stoke dry road on Monday, he caught well on nymphs, mainly sizes 14 fished high in the water. PeterSkillen boat fished, taking 6 fish and returned 3 he fished bloods dyke from a anchored boat. His fish all took size 12 and 14 buzzers.

The Island fished well earlier in the week but has since coloured up due to the rough water. Mr I Shobbrook fished the Island and caught thirteen fish of which he returned twelve on dials bachs fished on a washing line.

On Wednesday Eyebrook help the East Midlands regional qualifier with 28 anglers competing from 5 police forces. The wind blew hard from the north making it a rough journey to the willows and stoke dry where most had found the fish during practise. First place went to Chad Crithchley. He killed his first four fish for a weight of 8lb 7oz and caught and released his required 8 fish after that and had the job wrapped up by 2.45. Second place went to his boat partner and event organiser Julian Laybourn from Derbyshire Police who had caught his 12 fish before 4.00. Chad and Julian had tried fishing closer the turn rafts than they had during practise. Water clarity had improved greatly overnight and the fish were feeding, the pair found the fish within 75 yards of the bank and had been making short drifts covering the water. Julian caught his first few fish on blobs before changing to black buzzers. Well done to all competitors.

‘Fishing for fun’ enjoyed a good couple of days’ boat fishing and hospitably at the Eyebrook. 14 anglers caught 121 fish over the days giving the club a healthy return of 4.3 fish per rod over the two days. Most boats chose to find shelter at the willows to bloods dyke. Fishing from anchor most fishing buzzers either straight through or on a washing line.

J smith and K Haken boat fished and caught a dozen fish on a size 14 black hoppers. The fish mistaking it for a hawthorn fly. There have also been large numbers of pollen beetles on the water around the willows and pollards jump, blown on the wind from the Oil seed rape fields to the North East of the reservoir. Plenty of fish can be seen on the edge of the ripple, gorging on these butwith such large numbers, the pollen beetle being small and hard to imitate catching these fish is far from easy. Fishery warden Jobe took to the challenge and spent his afternoon off trying to tempt one of the freely rise trout to take his fly. He fished with many small dries, going as small as a black spider on a 16, but found the fish were so pre-occupied on the ‘beetle soup’ even a perfectly covered fish wouldn’t be fouled. Jobe did however manage 5 fish, 2 to a small foam beetle, including one brown trout of close to 3lb. A first for Jobe, after 4 years at the fishery he hadn’t yet caught a brown trout on the dry fly. The other 3 fish fell to a size 16 hawthorn imitation.

It was a busy weekend at the ‘Brook’ Saturday saw Dave Carter hold his annual event at Eyebrook. A friendlycompetition with the aim of raising money for charity. 24 anglers took to the water to the water of which 9 caught their limit bag of 6 fish. The competition was won byRuss Martin and Darren Pickering with 12 fish for 25lb 4oz. Archie Maquire won the Junior competition with a lovely 2lb 90z Rainbow, well done Archie, ‘Top angling’!! Thank you too Stuart at Eyebrook Tackle Shop for his kind donation of prizes along with boat vouchers provided by us. The event raised £200 well done all!

King Fisher fly fishers held their annual boat match at Eyebrook on Sunday. Conditions weren’t bad, winds had dropped off slightly from the days previous and were looking good! 13 boats set sail and headed straight for the northern end of the reservoir, I think mainly due to fishery warden David Davis’s advice. ‘It’s fishing its head off up there”. Most anglers caught, mainly on buzzers with a few on dries and emerger patterns such as an olive quill CDC and black hoppers. The day was won by Chris Channing and Dave Depear for their bag of 9 fish for 16lb 110 oz. Best fish of the day was a 2lb 9oz rainbow which was caught by event organiser Dave Allen.

All abilities friendly fly fisher’s outings, a group with the aim of getting disabled and less bodied anglers onto the water made the most of our two disabled boats. 6 anglers had a pleasurable and relaxed day at Eyebrook and all caught fish. Mark had 10 fish on small black dries and a mini damsel and Trevor Ashby had 6 on his own black buzzers. ‘Challenging’ conditions this week at Eyebrook. Strong northerly winds, hail storms, snow and heavy rain didn’t help matters! With sharp frosts at night mid-week the water temperature has fallen to 12.4c resulting in more moderate buzzer hatches and less fly life on the water. The rod average this week remained at a healthy 4.88 fish per rod however. Wind permitting the Chestnut tree, Cowshed through to the turn rafts have proved the best areas for the boats, drifting or anchored nymphs fished high in the water are still taking the majority of fish. Crunchers, Diawl bachs, and buzzers, preferably tied with a small amount of red seem to be doing better, fished with a booby or FAB on the point. Bank anglers haven’t been able to be too fussy where they fish due to the unfavourable winds. Most have fished the Island into Sams Dyke or Stoke dry where most have found fish. Similar tactics, floating lines with nymphs or emerger patterns.

The week started well, Monday saw highs of 14c with a steady north westerly wind, fish could be seen feeding up wind. Mr Knapp enjoyed a good days fishing to celebrate his birthday, boating 18 good fish on black buzzers and a booby fished on the point. Mr Couldrick and Mr Mitchel enjoyed the last day of their 3 day visit. Netting over twenty fish they drifted the cowshed to chestnut tree and caught well on nymphs. Mr J Bale went against the standard practice of ‘Matching the hatch’ and fished a dry daddy. The method seamed mad but it worked! Fishing from the bank he netted 7 very nice fish and had many other offers.

Winter returned on Tuesday. Strong north winds brought almost blizzard like conditions. Gerry Horner fished with his son Richard. Gerry caught 5 fish on buzzers and Richard had just the one. They found when the wind did drop slightly the fish would come up in the water to feed on buzzers. Wednesday was much the same with only a hand full of boat anglers braving the conditions.

Conditions were much improved on Thursday and the rod average reflected this, averaging just under four fish a rod. Gerry and Richard Horner were a float again, making the most of their weeks’ holiday. Between them they boated 8 fish including two very nice silvered rainbows of 3lb 2 and 3lb 6. Regular Roy Swinfield was on the bank once again, fishing crunchers and hog lice patterns he got stuck in and netted over twenty fish from around the Island. Horace Wood had a morning boat fishing, anchoring at Norris Dyke he fished a team on buzzers and caught steadily throughout the morning. He commented on just how well the fish fight.

Friday was an extremely busy day at the Brook. Bill Stewart was first on the bank, bright and early. He fished a washing line consisting of a black buzzer, cruncher and a FAB on the point. He caught 10 fish on a mixture of all three flies. Graham Clark fished the bank using a similar washing line technique. Graham added a gold ribbed hares ear to his cast and caught over twenty fish once again on all three of his chosen flies. Peter Nesbit had his second outing of the week, fishing straight lined buzzers he caught 12 good fish from a boat at the Cowshed. David Moddy had a good day, fishing small black dry flies he boated 5 extremely nice fish. Mr Rowson and Mr Cowan drifted all day and covered the water, finding fish feeding just under the surface on buzzers the pair caught constantly on drifts between the chestnut and the turn raft.

Saturday saw The Scierra pairs return to the Eyebrook, 7 pairs battled it out for a place in the final to be held at LlynBrenig. First back to the pontoon were Phil Longstaff and Gary Owen at 11.45, returning with 16 fish for a weight of 27lb 13oz they looked to be in a strong position. They were quickly followed by Belgium pair Geert Jansseens and Christian Jadouille the pair weighed in 16 fish for 34 lb 1oz which gave them a clear lead. Geert and Christian had worked out during practise that nymphs were picking up the better fish so they opted to fish a floating line and crunchers. The Belgium’s went on to win the heat in style. Riccardo Saccone and Martin took second place leaving the first boat back in taking third. Dixie and Rich took the best fish weighing 3lb 10 oz and won a trip down to the Golden Grove Fishery.

Eyebrook also held its heat of the Trout Masters qualifier on Saturday which was won by Mark Hunt. He caught his 4 fish within three hours for a total weight of 8lb 4 oz. Mark fished the Island with nymphs on a floating line.

Conditions changed again on Sunday making the fish hard to find. With 30 mph gusts anchors struggled to hold in the rougher water and most boats opted to fish the more sheltered wood side bank. 30 anglers fished the friendly competition ‘Bennetts Bash’which was won by Nick Findlay and Grant McMurry. Regulars Dave Chadwick, Bob Margery and Steve Lawrence bank fished together at Stoke dry road. All three of which caught plenty of fish, mainly falling to blobs and a good old cats’ whisker on the point.

The forecast is looking much improved for the week ahead, overcast with winds up to 15mph, we hope to see more fish feeding on the surface.

The Eyebrook continues to produce great sport with this week’s rod average a healthy 6.7 fish per rod, evenly split between boat and bank anglers. The shallows are certainly holding a lot of the fish at the moment. Cow shed, Norris Dyke and Chestnut tree being the hot spots. Drifts from the cow shed to the willows in a westerly is proving very productive. Bank anglers are still having their share of the sport, The Hawthorn Hedge, Sam’s Dyke and Cowshed all producing good fishing. The lodge corner is holding a good number of overwintered fish feeding on the fry, so the corner of the dam is certainly worth a try.

Bank holiday Monday was a quiet day with many anglers away with their families, however 19 anglers spent the day at Eyebrook and had a great day’s sport. The wind was a cold North west with the occasional period of flat calm, but the rod average was maintained at a respectable 5.89. Mervyn White fished various locations and caught in all apart from the damn wall, boating 8 fish and loosing as many as well. Roy Swinfield fished the bank, finding shelter in Wallys bay, Roy caught and released 14 fish caught all on a hares ear fished on a washing line. Luke Key fished the Belle and Stoke dry from a boat and caught 9 good silvered fish all on hares ears.

The wind was strong on Tuesday and it was bitter and cold but surprisingly it produced the highest rod average of the week, 8.9 ! S Marriott and G Dutton were first on the water. Drifting from the turn raft to the chestnut tree the pair caught and returned around 50 fish, admittedly they did loose count! Best fish went to just over 5 lbs. The method, size 12 black buzzers fished with a FAB on the point.

Wednesday saw the hardest conditions of the week, not the slightest bit of ripple could be found on the reservoir. Fish however could be seen topping everywhere! But without the ripple they were hard to catch,particularly from off the surface. Brian Skey sussed them out, taking 7 fish for 16 lb 3 oz Brian fished nymphs in the surface. James Carr and Ross Nichols had a very successful day. Catching very well on various methods fishing at the cowshed. The pair even managed to take a couple of fish on a CDC. Warden Jobe Burnham fished the lodge corner and caught two super brown trout on Fry Patterns. The best 4lb 8 oz (Pictures on our facebook page flyfishstore).

Temperatures warmed slightly for Thursday and Friday, resulting in impressive buzzers hatches. Dave Schofield fished mucky bay from the bank and caught using buzzers on a washing line using a cruncher booby to keep his flies high in the water. Dick Spicer fished from a boat and drifted from the cowshed to the willows, catching fish from start to finish on most drifts. Dick fished various methods but found size 14 crisp packet buzzers worked the best fished high in the water. Father and Son, Garry and Allan Smith had a good morning session on Friday. Boat fishing, they fished buzzers from an anchored boat. (half day boats now start or finish at 2.30pm). N Everson bank fished at the Hawthorn hedge and cast his CDC out. He soon had some interest and netted 7 good fish and had plenty of offers too.

It was an extremely busy weekend at the Eyebrook with nearly all the 26 boats out each day.Most boats fished Norris dyke and the cowshed and found fish feeding hard on the buzzers. K Harding and M Clarke fished with buzzers and Fabs, drifting the shallows the pair caught very well. Tony Lee bank fished the Leicester bank catching and releasing 16 fish. He found the fish were being picky and would only take a size 14 or 16 back buzzers or a small CDC which he fished as a single fly.
