Eyebrook Reservoir

Weekly report ending 17th June 2018

Weekly Stats:

Number Rods: 181    Number Trout Taken: 266 Number Trout Released: 422 Total Catch: 682

Rod Average: 3.77

Eyebrook is back on form with a weekly rod average of 3.77 ! Strong winds on Thursday and cooler air temperatures freshened the surface water bringing the fish back on the feed. Most fish have been caught whilst drifting the main basin fishing with floating or slow intermediate lines. There are also fish showing in Mucky bay and Stoke Dry. These fish are tricky to tempt but anglers can be rewarded with fully finned hard fighting fish that prove to be great sport when hooked in just a few feet of water. Most of these fish are hard on the damsel nymphs and pin fry. A single dry fly or olive nymphs are the likeliest way to get an offer. Lots of anglers have fished with blobs and damsel patterns whilst drifting the basin, others have had success drifting from the hawthorns on dry flies. Bank anglers have seen better sport this week. There is still a productive evening rise with good hatches of various sized sedge. Most bank anglers are fishing the Belle, Hawthorns or Island and fish dries or washing line nymphs.

The week began ‘challenging’. Water temperature was still 20 degrees and the bright conditions were far from perfect. Bill Woods and Jim Kay targeted the better fish at Stoke Dry there were a good number of fish showing but were extremely difficult to catch. The pair caught 5 fish between them and had many other offers. Member Keith Johnson bank fished in the evening at Stoke Dry road. He couldn’t manage to connect with a fish whilst fishing dry flies even though there were plenty of fish showing. He found a olive nymph to work and was pleased to have netted 6 fish for his short session.

Wednesday saw the first day of noticeable improvement. Lots of boats anchored or drifted in and around Dogwood bay. C Hendrey fished a washing line with small olive or black nymphs and a FAB (foam arsed blob) on the point to keep his nymphs close to the surface. He was very satisfied having netted 16 fish throughout the day. Mr Firth and Mr Whale enjoyed day 3 of their 4-day package at Eyebrook. (we offer discounted rates for 2, 3 and 4-day breaks which can be split between any of our waters). The pair stuck to what they do best, fishing with Yellow Owl CDC which is always a favourite at Eyebrook. Again, they commented on how many fish came to the dries with out taking. Presentation is most certainly key at the moment. Roy Swinfield bank fished at the hawthorn hedge and had great success on size 16 buzzers fished washing line.

There was a good blow from the west on Thursday, this did put several anglers off fishing. The few that did fish had good sport with the rod average for the day a respectable 5.7 fish a rod. Most boats had to take shelter along the Leicester bank, luckily that’s where the fish were. Various methods worked. Nymphs and dries were hard to present correctly in the rougher water, so most anglers had success on lures or blobs. Member Bill Whittle caught 7 fish for his morning session. (half day boats currently run too or from 3.00 pm.) Henryk Pycz fished a midge tip and washing line to successfully net over a dozen fish whilst drifting from the Belle.

There were a lot of boats out on the Friday practising for the AMFC match on the Saturday. Plenty of rods were bending with most boats drifting through the main basin from the Belle to the three trees. D Davies found an unusual Montana pattern worked well on a intermediate line. Mr Firth and Mr Whale had their most successful day of their visit. The pair caught over 20 fish all on that deadly yellow Owl.

Saturday was match day with 30 anglers fishing from drifting boats.. The 30 anglers caught 173 fish giving a match average of 5.76 fish per rod. Most fish fell to blobs on slow intermediate lines. Saturday was also the first day on pike fly fishing at Eyebrook. Please ensure you have the correct tackle to target the pike at Eyebrook. Minimum 9 weight rod with a large reel, a large net is a must (we recommend 42”) and an unhooking mat. If you are unsure on what is needed to pike fly fish or would like to book a guided days pike fly fishing please speak to Jobe Burnham at the Eyebrook fishing lodge. 01536 770 264.

Sunday saw the first ever ‘unfinished fly competition’ at Eyebrook. A charity match to remember past anglers. The limit on the day was 6 fish to the boat, 4 pairs managed to catch their limits. Mark Goodge and Fred Kettle found the better fish whilst fishing dries they weighed in 6 fish for a weight of 12lb 3oz and took first place. Mark also had the best fish of the day a 3lb 10z rainbow.

Here at Eyebrook we look forward to hosting the New for the 2018, boat tuition days. These days are run to a similar format as the popular bank tuition days, with the difference being that the fishing is taught from a boat. In this section instructors will show participants the correct way to start & drive the boat, anchoring , drifting and boat etiquette.  This is a perfect chance to learn to boat fish just in time for the warmer temperatures pushing the fish towards the middle. River Gwash stocked twice this week with another 1000 fish bringing this seasons stocking too 10,978.

A very ‘Challenging’ week at Eyebrook. Water temperature rose to 20 degrees making the fish lethargic and reluctant to feed. Water temperatures are falling with the steady north breeze and with somewhat cooler air temperatures. Water temperature is currently 17.5 degrees and anglers have seen an increased amount of fish feeding in the surface. The abundance of pin fry and damsel nymphs also hasn’t helped. The fish that are feeding have become very preoccupied and difficult to tempt. There has been a good evening rise most evenings this week with a productive sedge hatch once the sun has dropped behind the hill.

Bank anglers have certainly enjoyed most of the sport this week fishing into the evenings. Boats have had very mixed success on a variety of methods. There have been a few fish come to dry flies. With water clarity ‘gin clear’ a single dry fished on light leader material is a must and presentation is most important. Size 14 or even smaller dries working best. CDC’s, Middas or small hoppers taking most fish. There appear to be fish at various depths in the water column. Many boat anglers have caught on sinking lines from a slow to a fast sink with damsel or blob patterns.

Mr Sholhowski targeted pin fry feeders a long the weed beds at the willows. He was happy with his day after catching 3 fish one of whish was a brown trout of 6lbs. Member Mark Hunt bank fished in the evening. He had a great last hours sport with lots of fish rising to take sedge off the surface. Mark caught 8 fish in little over an hour.

Wednesday saw the English disabled fly fishers fish their annual floating line competition. Floating lines in bright conditions made things even more challenging! Most anglers found fish hard to tempt and the day was won with only two fish caught by Mr Mick Hill.

Dave Shaer fished on Thursday and caught 4 fish on a Di 3 sinking line and blobs whilst fishing along the netted bank. Mr Wharton fished a little deeper on a Di7 line and caught 6 fish again using blobs.

The weekend showed signs of improvement and averaged 1.8. most anglers found first and last thing the best time to catch particularly whilst fishing in the shallows at the northern end of the reservoir. Best returns were from anglers who persisted on the dry flies. Al anglers reported a lot of fish swirling at their fishing without taking it. Some boats also had success whilst fishing deep in front of the dam wall. Keith Johnson had the best return of the week, 10 fish in 5 hours with most coming to the dry sedge patterns in the last hour whilst fishing at Stoke Dry road. Mr Nataly also caught 10 fish on orange daddies, red diawl bachs whilst fishing in open water off the island. Warden Jobe Burnham fished at stoked dry road for a few hours on Saturday. He could see fish moving in very shallow water at Stoke dry round. After trying many different damsel patterns, he finally found a fly that worked. A size 14 olive nymph that the fish mistook for a damsel nymph. This shows fly size is extremely important at the moment and small patterns are a must.

Pike fishing starts at Eyebrook on June 16th and is strictly fly only. We advise anglers to call the lodge prior to making their trip to pike fish as we will not allow pike fishing when water temperatures are over 17 degrees in the interest of the fish. All anglers must also be in possession of a suitable net and an unhooking mat. Guided pike fly fishing is available with head warden Jobe Burnham. He has a very good knock ledge of the Eyebrook and pike feeding patterns. To book call the lodge on 01536 770 264

Not an easy week at Eyebrook for an array of reasons. North winds, bright flat calm days, gin clear water, an abundance of damsel nymphs and pin fry made things what we refer too as ‘challenging’ ! For most of the week, before water temperatures hit nearly 20 degrees there were a lot of fish feeding in the surface, chasing damsel nymphs or ploughing through the giant shoals of pin fry. Most anglers found fishing frustrating, lots of offers too dry fly but very few connecting with the hook. Damsel nymphs and Pin fry are two of the hardest patterns to replicate with a fly, the fish become very preoccupied. Most anglers found that a single dry fly was the only option, a hares ear CDC or small black hopper fished static producing the best results. Bank anglers have had good success into the evenings with an abundance of large sedge on the water, best areas have been stoke dry or the Island.

Monday was a day of two halves. Perfect conditions to start, Overcast and a steady breeze with fish slowing in various areas of the reservoir. Member Mark Hunt fished Stoke Dry to the cowshed and found the fishing frustrating to start. Lots of offers but the fish were just ‘coming short’ and swirling at the fly. Mark tried nearly every method he had confidence in but too no avail. As the day progressed the cloud broke away leaving the sun high and bright in the sky, surprisingly the fish continued to rise. Mark fished into the afternoon with a single Hares Ear CDC pattern and eventually managed to connect with 11 fish. John Witehead also fished dry flies at Stoke Dry. He found a single or CDC or a black shipmans buzzer worked best. John netted 7 fish for an afternoon session.

Tuesday conditions were better, a stronger north Easterly wasn’t perfect but at least there was cloud cover. Most boats were drifting the north end of the reservoir. John Smith and boat partner John had a great day. Fishing with orange daddies, Olive buzzers and black hoppers the pair caught 16 fish to the boat whilst drifting Stoke Dry and the Willows. Member and regular bank angler Malcolm Thompson fished along the willows tress and The Hawthorn hedge. Fishing with a Frazer nymph variant and a large bushing dry fly into the evening he caught 9 fish.

Wednesday fished well with most anglers finding a fish or two. Members Clive and Ian caught a dozen fish at Robbos cabin and damsel nymphs and blobs. Draycote Member Ed Douglas fished the dries at the North end of the Reservoir and caught 14 fish including 5 lb 8oz brown trout. James Besson bank fished into the evening and caught 7 fish on a washing line and crunchers. James also had a surprise when he netted a brown trout of over 5lbs. (we ask that all brown trout to be returned to preserve the wide stocks)

Many anglers found the fishing tough for Friday into the weekend. Lots of fish pushing water and moving in the surface but were extremely hard to tempt. Andy Smith caught 7 fish from a boat on Dry flies. Darren Blackshaw had a great evening and caught 7 fish in the last hour whilst bank fishing in Sams Dyke. All Darrens fish came to large sedge patterns.

Its not always big flies that catch big fish. Mr Spooer was delighted to net to net a 9lb 2 brown trout that took his size 12 CDC at Stoke Dry. The fish was safely returned and swam away strongly. Into the weekend there were more fish being caught at depth in the deeper water. Mr Wilson caught 11 fish on a di5 and orange booby drifting and Mr Haye fished size 10 buzzers with a long leader and had a successful day.

Sunday was an extremely tough day. Flat clam and extremely bright left anglers struggling to find the fish. Most fished over deeper water and found no consistency to what method worked best. Fishing should improve with cooler conditions forecast for the week ahead.

After another successful bank tuition day on Saturday, here at Eyebrook we look forward to hosting the New for the 2018, boat tuition days. Another consistent week at Eyebrook. Many bright days didn’t help, and we still have a north wind! A noticeable amount of fish have returned to the shallow water with cooler cloud covered days. Boats and bank anglers have caught well at Stoke Dry to the Cow shed whilst fishing dry fly patterns such as Crippled Midge, Big red, Middas and Shipmans buzzers. On brighter days fish have been found over the deeper water. Most anglers fishing slow sinking lines or fast intermediates with damsels and blobs.

Monday was a challenging day with bright flat conditions to start. Perter Nesbit fished in front of the dam wall and caught 7 fish on a Olive Cruncher and Black Buzzers. Mr Clarke enjoyed a short evening bank fished along the willows and caught 3 fish on a black hopper and had many other rises.

Tuesday was a day of similar fortunes. Mr Critchley enjoyed the second day of his short break fishing at Eyebrook. He bank fished at Stoke Dry road, taking advantage of the easy wading on the old road he caught and returned 7 fish whilst fishing a washing line set up with most of his fish taking the size 14 Diawl Bach. Scottish anglers Mr McNichol and friends enjoyed their break fishing the midland reservoirs. 10 anglers fished Eyebrook on Tuesday. All anglers found the morning extremely challenging but as the day progressed more fish began to feed in the surface and into the evening there were a mass of sedge on the water with fish going barmy for them! The 10 anglers finished the day having caught 81 fish between them mainly on sedge patterns fishing into the evening.

Many anglers found Wednesday tough with a stronger north wind making drifts ‘swift’ through the middle! Many anglers found sinking lines was the best method with blobs or damsels. Mr Mclean fished damsels and crunchers returned 13 fish. Mr Kelly fished on the edge of the slack water at the three trees and caught 5 fish on a CDC.

Dry flys fished extremely well on Friday. Mr Naylor and boat partner had a red letter day fishing hoppers and shipmans whilst drifting the shallow water at the north of the reservoir. Mr Naylor also returned a brown trout of 4lb 9oz. Draycote and Eyebrook wardens and guides Kevin Hart and Lee Henfrey had a day fishing on the ‘Dark Side’ Di 3s and blobs whilst drifting through the middle. The pair successfully returned over thirty fish between them. Lee is an expert on fishing sinking lines. To book Lee for a guided days fishing please speak to member of staff at the fishing lodge 01536 770 264

Saturday through up a surprise. Eyebrook regular Steve Rainbow who specialises in fishing the rudder caught the biggest Rainbow Eyebrook has seen for many years. An absolutely superb 11lb 8oz grown on fish. Steve had a steady day having only netted one fish by 8.00 pm, a brown trout of 5lb plus. It was almost time to call it a day when the monster took Steve’s tube fly fished on a di7 in front of the dam wall. (Pictures on our facebook page flyfishstore) Pete Pope had a successful trip bank fishing the netted bank. The wind was awkward with a strong right to left but Pete got his dry daddy to where the fish were and caught 4 during his afternoon session. Dave Willacy fishing on a 2-day package had a good evening fishing along the willows. Lots of fish moving on the surface taking sedge was a dry fly fisherman’s dream.

Eyebrook held an Angling Trust Team England Qualifier on Sunday. 39 of the best anglers fished to international rules. Most started on dry flies at Stoke Dry to cow shed come mid afternoon with the Sun high in the sky many were fishing the deeper water. The heat was won by Eric Caisley with 13 fish for a total weight, including C&R bonuses of 26lb. Bradley Gifford took second place with 11 fish for 21lb 15oz and third was Paul Davison with 10 fish for 21lb 7oz, Paul also caught the best fish of the day, a rainbow of 3lb 1oz. Full results can be found on our facebook page flyfishstore.

Its been a consistent week at Eyebrook despite anglers being faced with ‘challenging’ conditions. Water temperature continues to rise to 17 degrees at 12inches below the surface and clarity is ‘gin clear’! Most anglers have been targeting the deeper water and boats have now started to come in to their own. Bank anglers have been having most success into the evenings as light levels drop. (our evening permit starts at 5.30 and costs just £10.00) ! Best results have come to intermediate, midge tips or slow sinking lines however on days with some cloud cover and a breeze fish have been caught on dry flies such as shipman’s buzzers or crippled midge patterns. Most anglers fishing nymphs still close to static, blobs and damsel patterns are also accounting for a good proportion of fish.

For the start of the week bank anglers enjoyed good sport around the fence into Sams dyke. Mr Wadham and friend Mr Cornish enjoyed great sport fishing nymphs high in the water. Returning around a dozen fish each a day. Member Malcom Thompson also got in on the action and caught fish on a hawthorn pattern, Frazer nymphs and a ginger quill. Boat anglers also caught very well whilst anchored in Sams Dyke. Mr Mckenzie and Mr Robertson caught over 20 fish each on Diawl Bachs and Black buzzers.

Wednesday was very much a day of mixed fortune. A strong northerly made fishing difficult. Members Clive Moore and Ian Jobe tried to find shelter in Sam’s Dyke but struggled to get their anchor to told bottom, Once it did hold close to the bank near the fence the pair were straight into fish. Best method was floating line, diawl Bachs or small buzzers with a Foam arsed blob on the point to keep the nymphs close to the surface. Local angler Shaun Marriot and Graham Dutton also had a great day. Fishing crunchers again on a washing line the deadly duo lost count of the number of fish they had returned!

Thursday was back to the bright and flat conditions. Anglers were treated to a fly over from the Lancaster bomber to mark the 75th anniversary of the dam busters raid during the second world war. Eyebrook trout fishery was used as a practise site by squadron 617 as the reservoir was like those in Germany.

Mr Andrews and Mr Bently enjoyed their three-day break caught well every day on buzzers and Diawl Bachs. Matt Leyman caught 10 fish from around the Island on various nymph patterns. Thursday was the first day wardens reported having seen adult damsels on the water and anglers also reported seeing mayflies on the water.

Come Friday the fish had certainly moved to the deeper water. Most boats fished in from the dam wall either anchored or drifting. The breeze changed by the hour and often went to flat calm making boat positioning difficult. Warden Jobe Burnham made the most of his day off and boat fished. He started drifting the main basin and caught several fish in quick succession whilst fishing a midge tip and crunchers on a washing line. (size 14 crunchers with red holo worked best). After several successful drifts Jobe decided to venture to other areas of the reservoir to see if he could find more feeding fish. He headed to Stoke dry Road where there were occasional fish rising but were extremely hard to tempt. After no success he anchored in Mucky bay. Now fishing a floating and washing line he caught two grown on fish that both took a cruncher fished static. There was now a consistent ripple across the water and more fish were showing so it was time to try his luck on the dries. He fished a crippled midge/ big red pattern whilst drifting through the middle. It was slow to start but once the sun began to set the fish started to come think and fast. Most were coming to the flies blind but occasionally a fish rose to cast too. Most boats fishing infront of the dam wall caught fish. Mr Mickley caught 14 fish during his morning session on a sinking line and cast whisker.

The weekend fished steady with the rod average around 3 both days. Bill Couldrick caught 6 fish on buzzers and also returned a 20lb plus pike that took a nymph. Craig Smith caught the largest fish of the week. A 6lb brown trout took a nymph fished deep. (we ask that all brown trout are retuned). There have been reported of a lot of large browns following flies in various areas of the reservoir. Its only a matter of time before someone hooks a monster brown!

Another brilliant week at Eyebrook despite a lot of bright, hot and flat calm days! A record number of anglers fished this week. The good sport looks set to continue with a double stocking this week of 1750 fish! Bank fishing was slow for the start of the week with fish pushing out to slightly deeper water. The fish were back into the margins mid-week on and bank anglers recorded great sport from the Hawthorn hedge Boat anglers have had good sport all week. For the first part fishing fast glass or intermediate lines with a team of nymphs and washing line nymphs and even dries into the weekend. Top spots are Hawthorns to Sam’s Dyke, The Island and Mucky Bay.

Bank Holiday Monday was for once an excellent day weather wise. Poor fishing conditions however, little or no breeze and not a cloud in the sky. Mr Cram and Mr Wilson found fish off the netted bank at around 10 feet below the surface. They fished a Di3 slow sinking line with Diawl Bachs and a booby on the point to great success. Member Mark Hunt also braved the tough conditions and found fish feeding on damsel’s nymphs at around 4ft during the morning and size 14 black buzzers slightly deeper from mid-day on. He was pleased to finish the day having netted 15 fish. James Hobbs was delighted to net a super brown trout of 6lbs plus which came to a black lure. (pictures on our Facebook page flyfishstore) Mondays rod average finished at 6.78 not bad in ‘rock hard conditions!

Tuesday and Wednesday were similar days with long bright periods, more of a breeze did put a ripple on the water and more anglers reported catching closer to the surface. Mr Newbold bank fished along the Leicester bank and caught 17 fish on a selection on nymphs fished sub surface. Jamie Scott caught a selection of fish, 6 rainbows, 1 brown and a pike for luck. (pike fly fishing begins on 16th June. If you would like to pike fly fish at Eyebrook this season please visit our website, www.flyfisheyebrook.co,uk or speak to a member of staff).

Thursday was a very busy day. Conditions looked perfect with cloud cover and a gently south westerly. Several boats drifted the main basin and caught fish on nymphs fished high in the water. David Hussey had a cracking day catching a releasing over 20 fish which came to black buzzers and silver Invicta’s. Keith Johnson bank fished at the Hawthorns hedge and caught over a dozen fish on his own tied quill buzzer on a size 14. Eyebrook Guide and warden Lee Henfrey targeted the large Eyebrook brown trout in deep water. His best fish of the session was a 7lb brown that took his secret tube fly ! Lee reported having follows from fish he believed to be tipping the 10lb mark ! To book lee for guiding please speak to a member of staff at the fishing lodge on 01536 770 264. Bob Kinchen had the best rainbow of the week. A clonking 4lb 3 oz overwintered fish that took a black buzzer.

A flat calm start on Friday and fish could be seen rising right across the reservoir! Bill Law was the first angler on site and was quick to head to the netted bank in hope of catching a surface feeding trout! Upon arrival at the netted bank the wind picked up making presentation difficult. Bill did however manage to catch 2 lovely fish for his short morning session. Rodger Charles bank fished at the olde Road at Sam’s Dyke and had caught 11 fish before 11 O’clock! Rodger fish nymphs on a floating line. Draycote member Ed Douglas had his first of two trips to Eyebrook this week. Ed is a dry fly expert and fished with big reds and shipmans patterns in mucky bay. He had a cracking day particularly into the evening as the fish started to rise more freely. Ed finished the day having caught over 40 fish from Mucky Bay and the Island.

Saturday fished well. Dave Carter had his annual charity match, 28 anglers boat fished to a 4 fish kill permit. The day was won by Dave Etty and Chris Bates with 8 fish for a total bag weight of 15lb 3oz closely followed by our very own Mr Jones and his boat partner Mr McGuire with a total weight of 14lb 2oz. Well done to all anglers! Thank you to Eyebrook Tackle shop for supporting the match with prizes!

Mr Mark Seabrook and Duncan Palmer had a very successful day on Sunday. The awesome duo fished through the middle on various patterns and were rewarded with over 20 hard fighting fish to the boat. John Wadham bank fished between the Hawthorns and Sam’s Dyke and caught 10 fish on a Gold ribbed hairs ear and a size 16 black buzzer. Smaller buzzers are starting to work better now. Fish with 14s or 16s rather than size 10s and you will have more success!

Changeable conditions this week at Eyebrook. This week we went from cold strong north winds to flat calm, blue skies and 25 degrees! Not ideal conditions for any trout angler. The bright conditions over the bank holiday weekend has certainly had an affect on the feeding habits of the trout. Mornings and evenings proving to be most successful especially for the bank anglers. The fish have moved away from the shallows at the north end of the reservoir. Areas such as the Hawthorns hedge to Sam’s Dyke and the dam wall now producing the sport. Straight line buzzers working best on a floating or a midge tip. Anglers also choosing to use sinking lines with a mix of lures, blue flash or hot head damsels accounting for good numbers of fish.

Monday was a disaster of a day with winds over 25mph we were unable to let the boats out. Conditions settled for Tuesday, but a cold start to the day put the fish off until the sun rose. Lots of buzzers started to hatch mid-morning. Member Tom Dickson had a good session bank fishing at the Belle and had soon netted 8 quality rainbows on a ginger quill buzzer. Charles Kilner also found fish between the lodge and Sams Dyke. He targeted them with a buzzer and Diawl Bach set up and caught 9 fish. Boats also caught whilst anchored roughly 75 metres from the bank. Mr Wilson had 17 fish to the boat whilst fishing black buzzers.

It was a wet start to Wednesday which didn’t fish particularly well. Conditions dried up into the afternoon and rods were soon bending. James Vasey and Geoff Curry had their best day of their three-day break. The pair got it just right, fishing the Hawthorns to Sam’s Dyke they recorded nearly 50 fish to the boat nearly all of which came to buzzers with the occasional fish on a dry fly into the evening. ( we offer a choice of 2,3 and 4 day breaks which can be split between all four of our reservoirs. Please see our Website for further details, www.flyfishstore.co.uk

Thursday saw the start of the heat wave. Fish could still be seen in the surface and Ed Douglas persevered with dries to catch several of his 19 fish throughout the day. Dave Schofield fished a fast glass line with a washing line set up. He found most fish took his cruncher booby fished as his point fly. Dave was thrilled to beat his fishing partner, ‘top rod’ Roy Swinfield 10 – 6 ! Duncan Watson went for the big and deep option. Fishing in front of the dam wall he used a sinking line and snake to catch 4 very nice fish.

Friday was hotter still. Ian Jobe float tubed (no launch fee for float tubing) and fished over deep water. He used a mini snake that he often has success with to tempt over a dozen fish. Tony Lee had a cracking afternoon session bank fishing around the Hawthorns. He found crunchers and diawl bachs to work best.

Eyebrook held its first tuition day on Saturday. It was a lovely day to spend time at the Reservoir. Not ideal conditions for a beginner to catch fish however. A good day was had by all and all participants thoroughly enjoyed the day. Tuition days are perfect for complete beginners or novice anglers. They cover every aspect of fly fishing from entomology to casting. Our next tuition day is Sunday 3rd June. For more details visit our guiding and Tuition website –

http://www.flyfishtuition.co.uk/prices/

King fisher fly fishsers held their annual club match at Eyebrook on Sunday. 24 anglers fished to a 6 fish limit of which 5 anglers caught their limits. The day was won by Dave Allen and Martin Alexander who caught 12 fish to the boat for a weigh of 21lbs 11oz. Closely followed by Chris Channing and Dave Depear with a limit bag for 20lbs 12oz. Bart farmer found a traditional pheasant tail nymph (P.T.N) worked best. He caught 16 fish from various areas of the reservoir whilst boat fishing. Mike Greenwood had the biggest fish of the week. A lovely brown of around 8lbs that took a hare’s ear in Harrison’s corner.

Eyebrook Reservoir

Weekly report ending 29th April 2018

Weekly Stats:

Number Rods: 207   Number Trout Taken: 172 Number Trout Released: 1053 Total Catch: 1225

Weekly Rod Average; 5.95

Changeable conditions played a big part in returns this week. Temperatures plummeted, and the wind changed from west to north into the weekend resulting in little fly life around the reservoir. For the first part the week anglers enjoyed great nymph fishing. Buzzers were still working well, Diawl Bachs and crunchers also starting to take their share of the fish, in particular a red head Diawl Bach proving to be very successful. Dry fly tactics did also work well for the start of the week with fish feeding in the surface. CDC and emerger patterns taking fish for several anglers. Nymphs did work throughout the week, but best results were whilst straight lining during the colder days. Damsels and small lures also worked into the weekend.

Best areas remain the shallow parts of the reservoir. Mucky bay, the Pens and Chestnut tree proving to be very successful for both bank and boat anglers.

Monday saw a very good daily average of the week at 8.84 fish per rod. Anglers were met with ideal conditions. Brian Glover had a successful trip. Boating 14 fish which took either a cruncher or a buzzer. Peter Nesbit found the fish in shallow water. Anchoring close to the chestnut tree he fished a buzzer and cruncher on a washing line set up and caught steadily throughout the day.

Tuesday fished very well particularly for bank anglers. Mr Anderson dropped straight on the fish at the Penns, top side of mucky bay. He fished a washing line with FAB as a point fly. The fish couldn’t resist his hot head diawl bach resulting in thee treble hook ups! Good angling! Member Bill Law once again found surface feeding over wintered fish around the island he targeted them with his own dry fly. A shipman’s variant with legs! The fish liked it too and Bill was pleased to have netted three over wintered specimens by the end of his session. Mr Baxter and MR Mcgregor had a great boat fishing session. Again, Diawl Bach and buzzers proved to be the top flies. The pair and returned over twenty fish each from the island to the Cowshed.

Wednesday fished exceptionally well considering conditions weren’t great. A steady to strong breeze with the occasional heavy shower didn’t hep anglers, but the fish weren’t put off. A daily rod average of 13.1 isn’t to be sneezed at! Wednesday was the first time this year I have heard report of fish being caught on a foam daddy! Mr Mathers tried his look with one and was pleased to see 4 fish take it through out the day. Orange daddies always work best at Eyebrook. Generally, boat and bank anglers fished washing line nymphs along the Leicester bank. Chestnut tree and Island proving to be the hot spots. Ed Douglas boat fished and ventured to areas of the reservoir that haven’t been fished very much for several week. He had a drift into Robbos Cabin and was pleasantly surprised to catch and release a 4lb 10oz brown that took a small spider pattern. It just proves big fish will take small flies too! (all brown trout must be returned)

Thursday and Friday the feeding frenzy somewhat slowed to average close to 5 fish a rod. There was a noticeable chill in the air putting the fish off the surface. Member Roy Swinfield still caught 18 from Mucky bay whilst bank fishing of Buzzers and Diawl Bachs. Dave Willacy also had a good session fishing Diawl Bachs anchored in mucky bay.

The weekend fished relatively well. A strong wind changing to a north meant anglers had to find shelter in Mucky Bay, Sam’s Dyke or the north end of the reservoir. Mark Goodge and Ian Bradfield fished around stoke dry and boated 14 fish between them on nymph patterns. Andy Dawson caught 7 fish to his Dawson’s olive pattern and Mike Jones caught a tidy dozen on a small blue flash damsel.

Warmer weather looks set to return for the bank holiday weekend. Boat bookings are looking busy so book early to avoid disappointment!

Eyebrook Report W.E 22nd April 2018

Eyebrook Reservoir

Weekly report ending 22nd April 2018

Tel: 01536 770264        Fishery Mobile: 07738 490667

Weekly Stats:

Number Rods: 265   Number Trout Taken: 358 Number Trout Released: 1913 Total Catch: 2271

Weekly Rod Average; 8.5

The excellent sport continues at Eyebrook. A very busy week with 265 anglers catching 2271 fish giving a weekly rod average of 8.5. Bookings are busy for the forthcoming week, we advise booking boats early to avoid disappointment!

Marvellous buzzers hatches have continued all week. Most anglers fishing size 10 or 12 black buzzers fished washing line on cloud covered days and straight lined or under a bung during bright days. The very warm and bright days from mid-week did put the fish down but only a few feet, a floating line is all you will require at the moment. A few anglers have caught fish on the dries particularly first and last thing emerger patterns such as a Yellow Owl CDC or Big reds starting to catch. With a more overcast week forecast we expect to see more fish feeding on the surface. Water clarity continuous to improve as is now back to its usual clarity.

The Cowshed and Chestnut tree fished extraordinarily well for both bank and boat anglers at the start of the week. Many anglers returning very big numbers of fish. Into the weekend bank anglers found fish off the netted bank and hawthorn hedge. Boats caught well from the Hawthorns to Sams dyke and chestnut tree and The Pens.

Monday saw the highest rod average I have ever seen. Over 20 fish a rod, most angers couldn’t help but catch fish. Richard Callis fished the cowshed and caught 14 fish on a buzzer bund set up. S Newby fished Diawl Bachs and buzzers on a straight-line method and caught 20 plus fish whilst fishing close to the bank at Norris Dyke.

Chris Hartley and Nigel Woolnough had an exceptional day on Tuesday. A slow start to the day with a challenging strong southerly wind but into the afternoon the wind dropped, and fish came on the feed. The pair caught on several methods but found a washing line with buzzers most effective. Wednesday was an exceptionally hot day, temperatures hit 26 degrees. M Oliver had his best day of the season so far. Bank fishing at the chestnut tree he fished static buzzers again on the washing to successfully net 30 plus fish.

Thursday the heat did start to take its toll during the middle of the day. Best results were early morning or into the evening once temperatures had dropped. Most boats anchored in Mucky Bay or the Pens. Most anglers fishing a straight line buzzer outfit or under the bung. Pete Hawkins went against the trend and fished a slow intermediate and a damsel pattern and caught a dozen fish from around the chestnut. Member Bill Stewart had a pleasant surprise when a 5lb 2oz brown trout took his small lure whilst he was bank fishing. Dick Spicer and Trev Ashby had their first visit of the season and took the disabled boat out. Eyebrook have two disabled boats which are available for anyone to hire. Giving the less steady angler easy access onto the water. The pair fished in the cowshed and caught over a dozen fish between them on buzzers under the bung.

The good sport continued into the weekend. Guy Nicholson and friends spent 4 days fishing at Fishery Management Reservoirs. They split their 4 day break between Draycote and Eyebrook. All anglers caught extremely well from the hawthorn hedge and chestnut tree to cowshed. Washing line buzzers worked best in calm days or straight lining if you wind picked up. (We offer 2, 3 and 4 packages which can be split across all four of our reservoirs, Eyebrook, Draycote, Thornton and Foremark. For full details visit our website, www.flyfishstore.co.uk. ) Brent Hart had a good evening session on his float tube. He launched from stoke Dry and fished the northern part of the reservoir close to the no fishing limit line. Buzzers, flash back nymphs accounted for his 12 fish.

Member Bill Law found over wintered fish feeding off the Island during his short session. Upon arrival he could see his moving in the surface and decided to fish a washing line using a foam daddy as his buoyant point fly. To Bills surprise a fish came up and took the foam daddy on only his second cast and turned out to be a super 4lb 8oz overwintered specimen. Bill changed his set up mid-morning once the sun had risen into the sky. He put a small weighted blood worm as his point fly and fished straight through. He finished after a few hours having caught 4 overwintered fish all around 4lbs a piece.

After Draycote’s very successful first tuition day of the year on Saturday, were all participants landed their very first fish under the watchful eye of Guiding & Tuition Manager Tom Bird. Eyebrook looks forward to starting the first of its 2018 tuition days on Saturday 5th May. Eyebrook Report W.e 15th April 2018

Eyebrook Reservoir

Weekly report ending 15th April 2018

Tel: 01536 770264        Fishery Mobile: 07738 490667

Weekly Stats:

Number Rods: 132 Number Trout Taken: 194 Number Trout Released: 847   Total Catch: 1041

Weekly Rod Average; 7.89

Eyebrook is on top form with a weekly average close to 8 fish a rod. The warmer weather has raised water temperature by 2 degrees and with water temperature now at 8.5. The reservoir has come a live! Massive buzzer hatches throughout the day has go the fish well on the feed. The fish remain close into the margins, most anglers fishing in no more than a few feet of water. Bank anglers are returning very good numbers of fish. Earlier in week the netted bank produced good sport once again as did the Island into Mucky bay. As the water temperature increased the fish moved north to shallow areas of the reservoir such as Watsons Cabin, Stoke Dry and the Cowsheds. The favoured method for bank anglers is washing line buzzers, casting across the wind, leaving the cast static and wait for that hair-trigger take. Most anglers using a Foam arsed blob (F.A.B) or cats whisker booby as their point fly.

Boat anglers are also finding plenty of the fish. Earlier in the week fish were caught in open water on sinking lines but like the bank anglers found the fish in the shallow water over the weekend. Lures have still been catching fish and an increased number of anglers reporting have caught on a small damsel patterns. Most anglers choosing to buzzer fish. Floating lines, under the bung, straight line or washing one all working so the choice is yours.

Good numbers of overwintered Rainbows are now starting to be caught on natural patterns. Most are coming to nymphs from around the chestnut tree to the cowshed.

The start of the week wasn’t particularly spectacular. Clarity was poor, and a cold north wind combined with rain resulted in somewhat reduced returns. The average for Monday to Thursday was between 3.5 and 6 fish a rod. Mr Wilson caught 9 fish on buzzers, fished on a washing line from the Willows. Fishery warden Jobe drifted the main basin with a fast sinking line and caught 8 fish, 3 of which were overwintered fish averaging close to 3lbs.

Wednesday saw a better average of 6 fish a rod. Thich fog lingered for much of the morning followed by steady rain. Members Clive Moore and Ian Jobe got off to a good start in Sam’s Dyke. Once they had navigated their way in the thick fog! Ian was straight into a fish on a small black snake. After a couple more, fish and several pulls the action dried up, unlike the weather. Clive and Ian decided to hope for the best and tackle the open water. They had a swift drift through the middle and were surprised to catch fish on a steady basis for the rest of the day. The hardy pair finished the day having netted more than 20 fish between them. Thursday was much the same, however Malcom Thompson bucked the trend catching 11 fish whilst tucked away at Watsons Cabin. Malcom caught his fish on a black buzzer and Cats Whisker.

Friday the 13th known as an unlucky day, but it certainly wasn’t for the anglers at Eyebrook. The Reservoir had turned on like a light bulb and many anglers were returning ‘cricket scores’! Lots of fish were caught along the willows to stoke dry on buzzers (size 10 or 12 – black, yellow or orange cheeks). The rod average sored over 10 fish per rod.

The good sport continued for Saturday. It was a beautiful day and lots of anglers ventured to the waters edge. Mr Coups returned over 20 fish on buzzers whilst boat fish at the willows. Kenny Wilson had his second super day on the trot whilst fishing washing line buzzers. Most boats chose to anchor along the willows and bank anglers fished cow shed or the chestnut tree.

Sunday saw the best average of the season to date. A very healthy 13.0 fish per rod. Slightly cooler conditions but still lots of buzzers hatching off. Boats drifted in the south easterly wind along the willows or anchored close to the bank. Pete Line and James Britten had a red-letter day. The pair boat fished drifting the northern end of the reservoir on floating lines. They fished a mix of flies all of which caught fish. Buzzer, crunchers, Diawl Bachs and they even managed a fish or two on a hopper! Eyebrook guide Lee Henfrey helped Gwyneth Mooney learn how to fish Eyebrook. Gwyneth enjoyed her day and caught a good number of fish on a variety of methods. If you would like to get to know the water better or would like help with your fishing technique, Eyebrook has a host of in house available for you to book.
