We thought spring had sprung, we have blossom the Hawthorns are coming into leaf and a noticeable increase in fly life only to be halted by north winds with more rain! The week looked promising, Tuesday was noticeably warmer with a southerly wind and although the water level rose 2 feet at the weekend clarity remained good. From Wednesday levels dropped and clarity deteriorated, Clarity is currently at 3 feet and improving daily. The fish have still been pulling though, anglers have caught on a range of methods this week with buzzers becoming increasingly productive. Boat and bank still fishing very evenly with fish being tightly shoaled into the margins. For the first part of the week bank anglers continued to enjoy good sport off the netted bank from the three trees to Robbos cabin, particularly in a north or Easterly wind. The Cowshed to Stoke Dry fished very well over the weekend with the Cowshed, Black Cabin and Norris Dyke proving to be the most productive pegs for Saturdays Elite Performance Program bank heat. Boat anglers have found fish in various areas. Pollards jump and the Island both producing good sport. Sunday saw the boats fishing at the northern part of the Reservoir. The Chestnut Tree to the Cowshed fishing very well on both lure and nymph tactics.

Easter Monday fished well, Mr ross and Mr Leon boat fished returning 18 fish between them on a black and green tadpole whilst drifting into the hawthorns bank. Steve Rainbow got a quick evening session in and caught 3 fish on blobs bank fishing at the Belle. Tuesday was noticeable warmer which brought out the crowds! Lots of bank anglers fished the netted bank and all caught well on buzzers fished on various methods. Roy Swinfield fished washing line using a cruncher booby on the point to keep his buzzers in the top few inches, whereas Lindsay Bates fished a straight through method. Lindsay let his buzzers drift round on the steady ripple creating a natural presentation. Both methods worked equally well with both anglers catching into double figures.

The Reservoir didn’t look particularly inviting on Wednesday morning. The coloured water which had been holding off past the Island had dispersed leaving most of the reservoir with little more than 18 inches of visibility. Higham Ferrers had a club outing. 12 anglers fished to a 6 fish kill friendly competition. The reservoir fished surprisingly well, P Holland had bagged up by 13.00 with a bag of 6 fish for 12lb 4oz. Mr Holland found the fish at the Island, casting a black lure right to the bank on a slow sinking line.

Chris Hawkins enjoyed a very successful trip on Friday. After a slow morning Chris found the fish at Pollards jump. Fishing a straight-line buzzer method, he had three hours of none stop action, catching some super quality fish. Chris’s friends and colleagues Rodger Symons and Kevin Pearson also had a cracking day, they fished a cormorant tied with a holographic flash and cats whiskers drifting from the Willows into open water.

Saturday saw a first here at Eyebrook. The Elite Performance Programs First Reservoir bank heat. 14 world class anglers fished for points to become part of the AT TEFF teams for the 2019 World Championship in Tasmania and the European Championship in Montenegro. Anglers fished dedicated pegs, changing pegs every 55 minutes. The competition was catch and release only. Controllers were on hand to measure each fish before safely returning it. A big Thank you to all Controllers both on the Saturday and Sunday your help was very much appreciated. Pegs were set from Dogwood bay to the cowshed and every peg produced fish. Fishery staff were concerned with the clarity particularly at the Cowshed peg. Staff were pleasantly surprised to hear that this proved to be one of the most productive pegs with some anglers catching 7 or 8 fish during the 55-minute session. This proves that fish will still feed in coloured water and are most certainly catchable. Saturdays rod average was a healthy 5.76 (not including the EPP anglers) with many anglers recording double figure returns. Mr Chewter and Mr Ormiston caught very well on buzzers fished straight through anchored off Pollards Jump. (Straight-line or Straight through refers to anglers just fishing buzzers without a bung or buoyant point fly). Steve Ottridge found small buzzers worked best. Black buzzers on a size 12 or 14 accounted for his 8 fish.

Sunday was the boat heat of the EPP match. All boats fished around the Chestnut tree to the Cowshed and fished a mix of methods from floating line nymphs to slow sinking lines with lures. A high number of fish were recorded having been caught. The netted bank didn’t fish as well, and bank anglers had most success fishing at the Willows or Chestnut tree. Peter Wiston caught 9 fish at the Chestnut and Island on a hares ear and white lure. Bill Roberts had a good afternoon fishing just past Pollards jump and accounted for 11 fish on buzzers. J Beeson bank fished in Sams Dyke and caught 6 fish on black quail buzzers he also missed several and had several come off before making it into the net. Mr Organ and Mr Dewes had a day on their float tubes. (there is no launch flee for float tubes at Eyebrook) The pair caught fish on various fly’s including blobs, Snatchers and tadpoles.

The forecast for the week ahead looks to be improving, highs of 16 degrees for the weekend and the wind is due to change to a South Westerly.

After Draycote’s very successful first tuition day of the year on Saturday, were all participants landed their very first fish under the watchful eye of Guiding & Tuition Manager Tom Bird. Eyebrook is the venue for this years Disabled international. The two-day event will take place on 26^th and 27^th June. We are currently looking for boat men to help on the day and monitor anglers whilst fishing. However to ensure in this world of potential litigation that all parties are covered on advice from our insurance company if your guiding or instructing a client at Draycote, Foremark, Thornton & Eyebrook you will in future be require to produce:

1. A copy of your Liability Insurance, this you can email to us for it to be on file for 2018
2. A copy of your Risk Assessment for that days guiding / instruction

If your guiding or instructing and are unable to produce the required documents you will be refused access to the fishery.

Weekly Rod Average; 10.57

Eyebrook is on top form with a week’s rod average of 10.57 even with unfavourable conditions at times. A cold north or north easterly wind for much of the week, a hard frost on Thursday and Torrential rain Friday into the weekend didn’t make for ideal fly fishing conditions. Water temperature remains unseasonably low with masses of cold rainwater entering the reservoir, the level rose 2 ft during Friday night making getting anglers into boats challenging with the pontoons inaccessible!

Boats and bank fishing equally well. The Hawthorns to Sams Dyke and Netted are still producing great sport for the bank anglers. Boats have been catching from most of the shallow areas of the reservoir. Sams Dyke, Pollards Jump and The Willows being the hot spots.

Lures such as black tadpoles, green and white fritz tadpole and blobs are accounting for most of the big returns of fish. Anglers fishing them on a variety of lines from floating to Sink 5 lines depending on their chosen speed of retrieve. Bank anglers have had most success on more natural patterns such as buzzers, hare’s ears or diawl bachs. There have been buzzer hatches mostly into early afternoon as the air temperature rises. We hope to see more buzzer activity into the next weeks as air temperatures are forecast to get to 15 degrees come next weekend.

Mark Goodge and Ian Bradfield got the week off to a flyer catching well into double figures each. Mark was struggling at lunch time hadn’t netted a fish. Ian however had been steadily catching all morning on blobs. Mark who likes to fish more traditional methods had to make the hard decision to fish with a blob ! He was straight into fish and was pleased to see his rod bending plenty of times. After an hour of fast action Mark changed to Black buzzers and continued to catch at a good rate. The pair fished at Pollards Jump to the willows. Nigel Woolnough enjoyed a quick evening session. Fishing for no more than 2 hours and 45 minutes he fished Harrison’s corner and returned 11 nice rainbows that took a yellow lure or a black buzzer.

Mr Dimmick and Mr Guigan enjoyed their three day package. (We offer 2, 3, and 4 day packages for both single and two man boats, which can be split between any of our waters. For prices and details visit our website www.flyfishstore.co.uk ) the pair caught nearly 100 over the three days on black lures or orange blobs fished on slow sinking lines fishing from Robbos to the Willows. Roger Gibbons bank fished from several areas including The Chestnut Tree, Hawthorns and Willows and caught 8 fish on a Montana nymph.

Thornton Member Andy Lillie bank fished on Thursday and was met with a hard frost. Things started slowly but once Andy had found the fish at the Belle he soon had a bend in his rod. He finished the day having netted 13 fish with the majority taking a teguilla blob. (members from our other waters will receive a discount when visiting Eyebrook, for full details ask a member of staff) Members Dave Schofield, Lindsay Bates and Roy Swinfield chose to fish the more shelter netted bank in a North Westerly wind. All three anglers caught good numbers of fish on various nymphs fished as near to static as possible from a floating line.

Friday was a busy day with lot of anglers practising for Saturdays Scierra Pairs match. Jamie Scott had a great day. Boat fishing, he caught over 20 fish on green and white lures, damsels and black buzzers. It was just a shame about the weather as the heavens opened mid-afternoon! Micheal Farrell enjoyed his afternoon bank fishing off the Three Trees, he found a 3ft midge tip worked best with a team of crunchers.

The Scierra Pairs heat held on Saturday saw 14 pairs of anglers take to the water including all three of our in-house guides. With the reservoir rising about 2ft overnight due to heavy rain, conditions looked tricky however Jobe Burnham, Toff Crowther and Lee Henfrey all caught their limit before 11.30 on a mixture of lures on sinking lines. With Jobe and Toff being the eventual winners of the event with a bag of 12 fish for 23lb 1oz. Full results can be found on our Facebook page (flyfishstore). Sunday was an all-round pretty miserable day, only a few bank anglers putting in an appearance. Mr Findlay had a good day fishing the Olde Road in Sam’s Dyke, caught 14 fish on a cats whisker. The rod average for Sunday 5.13.

The reservoir has coloured at the North end, from the Island to the Eye brook but clarity remains good around the main basin. We advise anglers to call the lodge on 01536 770 264 to check clarity as we expect more heavy rain today.

A notice to all bank anglers, The Leicester bank (Lodge to The Cowshed) will be closed on Saturday 7^th April as Eyebrook is hosting an Elite Performance Program bank match. We currently require stewards for this match. This is a great opportunity for Eyebrook Regulars to watch some of the best anglers from across the UK. What a difference a week makes. Eyebrooks rod average has consistently increased every day this week, finishing on a high of 9.16 fish per rod and there no reason why it won’t continue to rise with another stocking today (Monday 26^th) and water temperature rising daily.

Bank anglers have seen the best of the sport with the fish feeding in shallow water around the margins. Boat anglers aren’t missing out and see best results whilst anchored no more than 50 yards from the bank. Water clarity was poor at the start of the week, most anglers fished black and green or green and white lures and found fish around the Hawthorns to Sams Dyke. As the week progressed, water temperature rose, clarity improved dramatically, and good hatches of buzzers could be seen, particularly into early afternoon when air temperatures just managed to get into double figures. Maybe spring is finally upon us?

On Wednesday we saw the first signs of improvement, a westerly wind and brighter conditions. Chris Heyburn was over the moon with his first fish of the day, a brown trout of nearly 5lbs took his green and white lure in Dogwood bay. (we ask anglers to return all brown trout) Chris also tempted several rainbows on the same fly. Shortly after hearing of Mr Heyburn’s catch, Rob Mungovan from the wild trout trust caught a brownie of similar size from the dam wall. His fish took a Leprechaun a deadly pattern that personally I haven’t heard of, must have been from before my time!

Things kept improving for Thursday and Friday with more anglers venturing to the reservoir. Bank anglers caught particularly well. Darren Spooner caught 5 from the Hawthorns whilst fishing with a black and Silver lure including a 5lb brown. Member Mr Thompson had a good start to his season, tempting 8 fish from the Hawthorns area.

Saturday was the first day we saw a reasonable hatch of buzzers. Most anglers reported catching fish at various depths but the majority taking size 10 or 12 buzzers at 2 to 3 feet. Mr Wells fished at the Chestnut Tree and caught continuously throughout the day. Eyebrook warden Lee Henfrey fished his own ‘Eyebrook bloodworm’ under the bung at 2 feet and caught several fish. Best fishing is certainly early afternoon at the moment. Rod average for Saturday was 6.

Sunday was warmest day of the week. A steady north westerly meant ideal buzzers conditions. Member Bill Law bank fished at Badger point. He caught 16 fish for a morning session on a stick/ caddis variant and mini lures all of which he ties himself. There have been several overwintered rainbows also putting in an appearance. Toff Crowther caught a 3 lb rainbow on a white humungous, on his fish cast in Mucky bay. “the fish went like a steam train”. Colwick Fly Fishers had a group trip to Eyebrook. All Members caught extremely well on various methods. Blobs, cat’s whiskers and buzzers doing the business. A special mention to John Parnham who had a red-letter day. John fished with an intermediate line and a snake and caught two incredible brown trout. One at 7lbs and another around 10lbs! Pictures on our Facebook page. Flyfishstore. Opening day dawned on the 10^th March to a very wet morning from the torrential rain received during the night. The far end of the reservoir the reservoir was already carrying some colour from the swollen Eye Brook flowing into the reservoir, there was that much water with the reservoirs level rose 10inch during the day!

Bank anglers fishing from Pollards Jump down past Robbo cabin reported a good number of overwintered brown to 4lb. As the Eyebrook has a wild population of breeding all browns must be returned.

A good number of bank anglers fished the Hawthorns down to mucky bay with the hawthorns producing in the morning & mucky bay fishing well in the afternoon.

Opening day & as you would expect lures such as cat’s whisker, dancer, orange lures & blobs caught the majority although a few anglers who fished buzzer patterns were rewarded with Roy Swinfield fishing small buzzer patterns off pollards jump catching 10 trout.

Eyebrook Fishery ranger & guide Toff Crowther fished for a couple of hours before his shift & caught 10 trout from the hawthorns with Toff commenting how close to the margins the fish were.

On our second day of the season 11^th March the bottom end of the reservoir was coloured from the day before although the area in front of the lodge, down past the hawthorns to Sam`s dyke and across to pollards jump remained reasonably clear & fishable with Mike Jenkins & Steve Wright fishing on a two day package catching over 40 fish for the day. Member D Chadwick caught 7 from the bank with Keith Harding & Mike Clarke catching 10 trout to the boat including pike to double figures.

The bad weather is behind us & we have a good forecast for this week which will allow us to complete our pre season jobs, get engines on boats & complete our 4000+ pre season stocking of rainbows averaging 1lb14oz to 2lb4oz,  all in time for our opening day Saturday 10th March

With the fishery opening earlier this year we will have some minor bank restrictions for the first 11 days, map and fishing areas Eyebrook Opening 10th March, details on bank fishing.

The lodge will be open on Sunday 25th February as Stuart & Sue of Eyebrook Tackle shop will be running their Rutland Spring Fair. 10.00am – 2.30pm with new tackle ranges for 2018 on display with local clubs & associations in attendance.

No entrance fee. There will be a raffle with proceeds donated for the Breast Cancer Charity “Casting For Recovery”

English Disabled Fly Fishers will be at the lodge, Eyebrook this year hosts the disabled International

Jobe & Ifor will be at the lodge to answer any questions you have regarding the 2018 trout season

Please note for 2018 season our upper 8 fish limit has been reduced to a 6 fish limit, the day permit rate has been adjusted down accordingly. Any angler with stamps on their loyalty card for 8fish will be eligible when their card is full for a FREE 6 Fish permit.

On Sunday 17th December 2017 the Eyebrook Lodge will be open from 10am – 12pm for current members and anyone interested in an Eyebrook membership to come along and discuss the various membership options available and discuss our plans for 2018 with Ifor Jones & Jobe Burnham, light refreshments will be available, we look forward to seeing you.

On Sunday 17th December Stuart will also have his shop open from 10a – 12pm offering 20% off RRP
