Fishery Report: Week Ending: 17th May 2020

Eyebrook reopened for fly fishing on Friday 15th May, currently we are following the recommended guidelines to ensure social distancing & with limited anglers to allow our staff ample time during the day to clean as disinfect the boats, life jackets, pontoon & building as required, we are therefore limited to 20 bank anglers & 14 single person boats.

I would like to thank all the anglers for their understanding as the phone has been extremely busy with some anglers struggling to get through, it should get easier as today we ordered a separate dedicated phone line for the credit card machine which will speed up your pre payment process. I would also like to thank everyone for following the guidelines & ensuring the fishery worked smoothly for your visit.

As the evening fishery ranger is busy with additional duties, disinfecting of boats, life jackets & extra cleaning, they are not currently able to take any boat bookings after 6.00pm

Therefore, currently we are only able to take bookings between 7.30am & 6.00pm

Having been involved with managing Stillwaters for the past 38 years I wasn’t sure what to expect having had the fishery closed during the prime spring months.

With over 5500 trout in the reservoir when we closed on March 23rd & having seen the fish feeding along the shallows while we were onsite carrying out our maintenance during the lockdown I was expecting to see some good sport, I wasn’t expecting to see the exceptional fishing we enjoyed during the first 3 days with boat and bank anglers catching over 1500 trout for a 13.98 rod average.

As epected, the trout are in excellent condition & extremely fit!

As many anglers are practising catch & release can you ensure you squash the barb or use barbless patterns

Most of the fish were taken on buzzer, nymphs & dries with the areas you would expect at this time of year mucky bay, chestnut, Sam’s dyke, hawthorns & platforms being the areas to fish, with Buzzer hatches, damsels, olives & mayfly were on the trout diet

Floating line or midge tip with, buzzer, damsel, diawls, big red, cdc, hoppers, crippled midge have been the most productive patterns

There is currently little weed about allowing bank anglers to fish all available areas.

The water is gin clear with the water temperature 14 degrees
