Eyebrook has been on top form this week and doing what it does best, “world class top of the water sport”. That is until a rare occurrence happened and we had good weather during a bank holiday weekend! Water temperature has now risen to 20 degrees which has unfortunately put the fish off the surface. With cooler longer nights, however this should soon fall again to a more sensible temperature.

Monday to Friday fished exceptionally well for August. Boat anglers were drifting over the deeper water and caught well on dries such as Shipman’s buzzers, Hoppers in various colours and emerger patterns. Bank anglers also enjoyed good sport with more fish showing an interest in fry around the weed beds.

The week got off to a good start, Monday saw a rod average of 5.77. Andrew Thomas caught 6 fish including a super 5lb 2oz rainbow on a Diawl Bach fished on a washing line. Mark Hunt also had a very prosperous evening session. Netting 10 fish, 5 of which were over 3lbs. Mark caught all his fish on CDC’s and ermeger patterns. Peter Baker enjoyed the great sport on Tuesday. The fish were coming to the dries thick and fast. Peter caught around 20 rainbows on a mix of dry fly patterns whilst drifting the main basin. He found the Yellow Owl CDC and black bits to be most successful. Member Carl Cower enjoyed his afternoon session catching 7 ‘lumps’ on fry patterns from around the weed beds.

Wednesdays average remained a steady 5.4 with masses of fish in the surface. Dries worked extremely well and conditions were perfect. K Haken and J Smith caught 15 fish between them on a mixture of Diawl Bachs and Hoppers. Warden Toff Crowther fished during a few spare hours he had. Catching and returning 9 fish he caught on CDCs and fry patterns.

The top-class sport continued into Thursday and Friday. Trever Ashby and Ken Walters had their best day of the season. Continuously catching fish on a mix of dries and nymphs whilst drifting in front of the dam wall. Andrew Rogers caught 12 fish on a hopper whilst drifting over deep water.

The weather change for the weekend. It was flat calm for much of Saturday and Sunday with not a cloud to be seen in the sky. Brian Skey did very well despite the conditions. He drifted from the Chestnut tree to the Willows and caught 5 fish on a Diawl bach fished on a washing line.

Top tips for fishing dries at Eyebrook- Fish from a drifting boat, you will cover more water and therefore more fish. The fish are very dispersed at this time of year. Make lots of short casts and cast to any rising fish. Fish with a single fly. You can often spook fish when water clarity is clear whilst fishing with to many flies. Or flies tied to close together. Fish with as thinner diameter tippet material as you can but be aware there’re a lot of hard fighting fish at Eyebrook! Use ‘Mud’ on your tippet material particularly in bright or calm conditions. This will help disguise your leader.

We hope this weather will soon pass and water temperatures will lower. We will be stocking a further 550 fish this week bringing the season stocking to over 20,000!!
